What are these Windows Explorer clipboard formats used for?

If I select files in Windows Explorer and click Copy I find the following
formats on the clipboard.
I know what FileDrop contains. How can I find out what the others are used
for?

FileDrop
FileName
FileNameW
Shell IDList Array
Preferred DropEffect
Shell Object Offsets appears if there is only one file

Thanks

Basically, an object on the clipboard can have many different formats.
Because the drag source doesn't know which application will use it (or what
format the drop target will want), the drag source places on the clipboard
what formats it supports. Then, the drop source can enumerate through those
types, and determine the one that best suits its needs.

Hope this helps.

I was wondering what the formats I listed are used for.

Is there a way to copy a PIL image to windows clipboard (as a dib image or a bitmap, I suppose)? What I would like to accomplish is to do a fast copy and paste of images from my python application to a windows application such as powerpoint. A slower way is to use files, which is what I am doing at the moment. Thanks in advance.

I need to add the ability to drag from a Windows Form and drop into a non dotNet application. For example, having a generated image in my app that I wish to drag out into explorer as a friendly way to save it. I have tried creating the object that I place into the DoDragDrop() by inheriting the COM interfaces IDropSource and IDataObject with no luck. If anyone can help I am very much open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I need to write a conversion routine to split pictures out of about 10000 word documents. (Actually the text is converted to RTF, the pictures should be converted to jpg). I thought I could simply save the word doc as rtf and strip the picture. That works. The problem is getting the picture to save correctly. I can use word to determine which pictures are in the original document and can get them to the clipboard. I can't seem to...

Hi all! Did anyone try the subj? I use extern IsClipboardFormatAvailable and GetClipboardData from user32.dll. IsClipboardFormatAvailable(14) returns true, but GetClipboardData(14) returns null-pointer after that. I found working source codes that can get CF_ENHMETAFILE from clipboard, but they are C++ WinAPI applications. Maybe there's some ruse, but I can't

On the Internet there are many descriptions of the memory layout for a DIB. But none that I can find for a Bitmap. Is that because a Bitmap's layout depends on a related device. If that's the case, is a clipboard's Bitmap layout always related to the screen?

I trying to learn what a Bitmap is. Not a Managed Bitmap Object but one that, for example, comes from the clipboard with CF_BITMAP. I'm guessing that a CompatableBitmap is an array of indices that point to the colors in a Palette of the display driver. So if I get a bitmap via CF_BITMAP I need to also get a Palette off the clipboard and realize it then display the bitmap. I believe "Realize it" means to put it into the display driver.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
