Asynchronous communication and events firing?

Hi,
I am workin on a gprs/gsm modem connected with a computer running my application. I just want to have such capability in my web application to recieve sms and show them as it is on my web page (just like msn messenger does and shows people comming online and going offline etc). Note that I am communicating with number of devices with that gprs/gsm modem on my computer. And remote devices just sent replies to those sms.
I know its concept of asynchronous communication....but need a little help to start doing work over it.
Thank you
