Can xml schemas from a dataset be used to validate standard xml files?

I have an xml schema created from a dataset and an xml file created with
that same dataset. If I use the xml schema as an xmlSchemaCollection in sql
server, can I use standard xml with the schema? or does it neet (the xml
file) need to be created by the dataset?
