problem with CSS and DTD

Hi! I'm trying to develop a webApp onVisualStudio2005, but I have a
problem with CSS ... I think it's due to this directive:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >

.... if I delete this the page rendering is correct, but I obtain an
error about tag <html>.
Any suggestion?

By removing the DOCTYPE declaration you are forcing the browser to use
"Quirks Mode":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quirks_mode

In this mode the CSS rendering will be less standards complient (but
more like legacy browsers).

It's best to get your CSS working in complient mode, that way it's
more likely to work in multiple browsers.

If you really require quirks mode then you can acheive it by adding a
comment above the DOCTYPE declaration.
