Whither Control Adapters?

I just emerged from under a rock and discovered the ASP.NET 2.0 CSS Friendly
Control Adapters, as described at this link:

http://www.asp.net/cssadapters/
and this link:
http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archi...hitecture.aspx

The concept is rather appealing to me, but it appears [after googling a bit]
that there has been no further development by MS of this technology since
November 2006.

So I'm wondering what the current status or future of Control Adapters is?

Was it perfected on it's 1.0 release in November 2006? (I doubt it).
Alternatively if it has no future, why did MS stop investing in it? Or does
it have a future?

Thanks.
