Best place to change formview mode

I have a FormView that displays when I select (click) on a record in a
GridView to its left. I want to change the FormView mode to edit if a date
field is empty but I don't know the best place to perform the change. I have
tried in Page_Load and PreRender but I am getting errors. Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.
