FindSiteMapNode Being Called Twice?

I am attempting to override the FindSiteMapNode(string rawUrl) method.

When stepping through the code in debug mode, it appears this method
is being called twice -- once with the complete url and again without
the query string.

Is this behavior "by design" and if it is can you please explain why?

Thank you!
