Can't create user acounts in web site admin wizard

I'm really not enjoying the Web Site Administration Tool that every
tutorial seems to love.

For starters, I couldn't get it to show the security tab at all. With a bit
of help, it turned out it was because I didn't have the connection string in
my web.config file. I assumed adding a SQL Express DB to my project would do
that form me. Shame on me for assuming. ;0)

Then I couldn't create roles. Googled that and the solution that worked was
to delete by DB log file.

Now I can't create a user. I just get this useless error:

"An error was encountered. Please return to the previous page and try
again."

Any ideas?
