Get value of a field in detailsview

Using Expression Web
why is getting the value of a field in detailsview not as simple as
text4.value=detailsview1.minimum (minimum being the field name)

Why does every solution have to be so many lines of code. Can't the control
simply expose the fields???
Thank You for any help
