GridView Type Casting

I would like to know how to cast a gridviewrow to a generic list object on
the gridview's SelectedIndexChanging event. I've tried the following.

protected void gvCustomerList_SelectedIndexChanging(object sender,
GridViewSelectEventArgs e)
{
GridView gv = (GridView)sender;
Int32 row = e.NewSelectedIndex;

Customer customer = (Customer)gv.Rows[rowIndex].DataItem;
}

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
