SQL MemeberShip Provider: How to manage passwords without writing code?

P: n/a
Hi,

I am using asp.net 2 SQL membership provider.

Is there any tool or application that helps me manage my users' password? I
am trying to do that without writing any code.

Thank you,

Max

Yes, there are built in bits that do what you are asking, but it is all
designed around a "self-serve" scenario. You can drag and drop a variety of
login/authentication controls and have your site managed without a line of
code.

Max2006,
The whole idea of the password from a security standpoint is that ONLY the
user is supposed to know it. That's why one of the most frequently used
Membership configuration options is to store ONLY THE HASH of the password in
the database, and if I lose my password, the system will generate a new
temporary one for me with the option for me to have it emailed. You don't
have to do things this way (e.g. you can configure to store passwords in
cleartext) but I wouldn't be very happy about signing up on your site if I
knew you were doing this.

Hi Max,

Regarding on the ASP.NET Sql membership user&role management, so far there
is no official tools for managing username/password outside of ASP.NET
context. However, since ASP.NET has provided many built-in Login controls,
you can create a web application and drag some of the login controls(with a
little code) to manage memebership users(create, manage accounts and roles).

Also, the membership &role API/ provider can also be used in non-ASP.NET
application(console or winform), you can also simply create a custom
utility to manage those membership &role stuffs out side of your ASP.NET
application. Here are some blog articles discussing on this:

management-out-of-asp-net-context.aspx
