get ${APPDATA} for log files

Hi;

I want to get the Application Data directory for the user my web app is
running under to put log files in a subdirectory there. How do I get this?

Or if this is not the right place to use - what is?

Hi Dave,

You could use
Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolde r.ApplicationData) to get
the AppData directory. However, by default the service account that is
running ASP.NET will not have sufficient privilege to write in that
directory.

I suggest you to create a sub-directory under your web application (or use
another configured directory) and give write permission to your service
account.

If you don't want to configure a separate directory for it, you could use
the Path.GetTempPath() to write to the temporary path, this should be
writable by default. However, it might not be a good idea to keep log files
there.

But if I use a subdirectory under my app's root, then can't anyone get to it
with a browser?

What about c:\windows\system32\logfiles - can I put a directory there?

Hi Dave,

You could use IIS to remove all access on the subdirectory in its property
page tab "Directory Security"; or you can remove "Read" access on the tab
"Directory".

Anyway, use any folder you want, as long as you've configured required
write permission to the account.
