GridView, must not be understanding something fundamental

I have a GridView
MyClass[] List = new MyClass[10] ;

for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)
{
List[i] = new MyClass();
List[i].FirstName = " First " + i;
List[i].LastName = " Last " + i;
}

GridView1.DataSource = List;
GridView1.DataBind();

now the data shows up fine.
I also have AutoGenerateEditButton = True (in the properties), so I have
"Edit" shown in column 1....
But when I click the Edit button, the page just refreshes itself... the row
is not put into an edit mode.... what am I missing?

I got the ObjectDataSource to work (which would be my preferred way).... but
I'm still curious how one would make it work if I didn't use either Sql
source or an ObjectDataSource...
