number of queries

I often see a message like this on the bottom of web pages

page generated in 0.04 seconds used 5 queries

how do they count the number of queries
?

Probably they are counting the number of SQL Statements that were executed.
Doesn't sound particularly impressive to me. I couldn't care less less how
long it took to generate the page and how many queries it took, as long as
the page is responsive.
