Redirecting in 2.0 TreeView TreeNodePopulate

I'm currently using the PopulateOnDemand feature of the 2.0 TreeView, but I
have a problem when the user isn't authenticated (or when their session has
timed out). The method is run via an AJAX call (have to, due to the size of
the tree. Currently, if an unauthenticated user attempts to expand a node,
nothing happens. I would like to redirect to the login page, or at least
send some kind of message to the user, but I can't figure out how to manage
that. Does anybody have a suggestion?
