Geting VS '03 to play nice with my javascript

I'm try to put some server-side (codebehind) variables in my javascript.
Something like this:
<script language='JavaScript'>
var monkey = <asp:literal runat="server" id="strMonkey"></asp:literal>

But VS'03 doesn't like any ASP tags being wrapped in a script tag.

So, I response-write the script tag. No my literal works, but VS '03 keeps
reformatting my javascript in design view.

I asked yesterday about this and was pointed to this article:

....oops...didn't finish...

anyways, I'm not sure how that article resolves the issue either.

Is there no easy way to leave client-side javsacript in the aspx page as-is?
It seems odd that i need to move my client-side scripting into my
server-side code to get it all to work.
