javascript updated textbox content can't be retrieved by server si

javascript updated textbox content can't be retrieved by server side
When i call a javascript to update a asp:textbox content
say, document.getElementByID('textboxname').value = 'abc'
Then submit to server side
dim x as string = textboxname.text <<<<<<< =empty string
why???????????????????
