SQL data into ASP.NET 2.0 variable

I don't know why I am drawing a blank, but I don't remember how to
extract data just to a variable from a field in SQL (2005). Just text
(string). I want to get a field into a variable thne use doc.write to
display it. I am considering using a hidden field and binding it, then
using the info, but I figured I should just ask. Thanks
