Can .net 1.1 call asp.net 2.0 web service

Can a asp.net web app in framework 1.1 call web service on a computer that
is running framework 2.0?

But...I assume the web app and the web service cannot be on the same
computer running as virtual sites under a main site (app is configured to
use 1.1 and service is using 2.0). If I do that, IIS barfs with 500 status
code even when accessing the 1.1 site.

No it doesn't. Seriously, give a "little" more info. Create a one-line
1.1 page, no web service, and test. Is the error "only" when your 1.1
site accesses the 2.0 webservice on the same box? You "might" have
wanted to include that in your first post. Why am I using so many
"quotes"

no reason they can't be. also most 1.1 web sites will run fine under 2.0
with no changes (just flip the site in iis to 2.0)
