Override how a data type persists

I have a constom control I've built and it has a DateTime property. The
property value always persists in the format mm/dd/yyyy HH:mm:ss but I
don't want to include the month day an year, how can I override the
persistance functionality so the value shows up in the aspx page as
HH:mm:ss?
