More Information than just IIS Log Information

Hi,
I dont know if this is the right forum for this question but I hope
someone is able to answer this for me. I know a lot of information can
be retrieved using IIS Log files. But there seems to be something that
my boss wants me to do. Find a way to implant a cookie on user and get
more information than just the information that is retrieved by those
log files. He says one can get more information like browser resolution
and stuff(which he didnt explain what exactly it is). I was wondering
if there any way of doing this and some information like that?
Thanks in advance

This is generally obtained client side using JavaScript :
http://www.pageresource.com/jscript/jscreen.htm

You could then post the information to your web site (for example from the
home page).

Hi Patrice,
Thanks for the weblink. I was wondering if I can get
more information than that is mentioned in the log files of IIS files.
I know one can get enough information like user ip, agent and stuff but
I want to know if we can actually get hold of anymore information than
just what is logged by the IIS ?
Thanks

No, see the IIS administration console to see available information :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...9490a9bbb.mspx

Basically you have what is automatically transmitted on each request (such
as cookies).

Also you may want to ask your boss what is the intended usage for this
information (for example it could be better to design the page so that it
best fits (by using CSS, relative sizes, centering etc...) rather than to
test and place explicitely elements on the page).

You may also find general statistics here and there on the web.

Patrice, I have some idea why this information which I am trying to see
would be useful. We use webtrends for analysis of web traffic. It would
be useful to collect information such as screen resolutions, browser
information and stuff like that so that redesigning for this sites
gives the perspective on how many people are using what kind of
settings and indirectly helping us out to design the site accordingly.I
hope I could make it clear what I am looking for
Thanks in advance

subrato,

It probably would be a lot easier if your boss and you had a chat
about *exactly* the types of information you'd like to get.

That would make the job of telling you whether the information may be obtained and,
possibly, how it could be obtained, much easier.

Juan, As per my previous post, the data needs to be consumed for
analysis purposes under webtrends. Currently we are using IIS logs
files and necessarily dont have all the required data. I was looking
through webtrends and there is something called as SmartSource Data
Collector and I am yet to find a way to work with it. I would really
appreciate if you or anyone can help me with working of that.
Thanks

That topic is a bit off-topic for an ASP.NET newsgroup like this one.
You might want to try posting to microsoft.public.inetserver.iis

Alternately, you might want to enroll in one of WebTrend's
classes about the SmartSource Data Collector :

http://www.webtrends.com/Services/Tr...ssentials.aspx

They run $1,200...
