I hope this is right group for the question. If not, please
forgive me and give some pointers.
I have VS 2003 and Web application project which builds and works
just fine. I need to build the project with command line on a
different machine, which does not have IIS running. Devenv naturally
wants the working virtual folder exist. Is it at all possible to
instruct it not refer to the URL? Theoretically, it should not
be necessary just for the build, I can achieve my goal by compiling
cs files and resources separatly but can I do it with a simple
devenv /build command?
Thank you in advance. 8 1494
A Web Application ALWAYS runs in the context of a web site. It is an HTTP
handler.

Sure, it does. The question was about building it, not running.

Sorry. I misunderstood you. Try using a MakeFile.

Yes, running resgen.exe and csc.exe on individual source
files does the job. But this solution is not as convenient for
automatic nightly builds on a dedicated machine. I was hoping
it was possible just to change some settings in the .csproj
and build it with devenv.exe one-liner.

That's what MakeFiles are for.

Check out the ideas here: http://pluralsight.com/wiki/default....outWebProjects
Personally, I never use "Web Application" projects anymore. The way
microsoft expects you to use them is completely counter to any
develovment team structure that I've ever seen. It's so much easier to
just have a class library and some .aspx files.
Good luck!
