Extracting Tables and columns with data types from a database

Im trying to write a simple app that will show all of the user created
tables along with their columns and column datatypes.

Any suggestions on how to approach this???

For this you need to access the database metadata. In SQL server you can
obtain metadata either with system stored procedures or with information
schema views. Search your database documentation for "metadata".
