creating a lookup window?

hi all,

i am contemplating the best way to create a lookup window in asp.net, and
need some input from some more seasoned developers. i have a page that
displays data where the user is able to filter the data by customer name,
number, etc. to allow the user to search for the name to filter by, i wanted
to create a "pop-up" window that would perform the search and return the
value they selected to the original page. i've read that this is not
necessarily the way to go when dealing in webforms instead of winforms. any
suggestions on how to do this better?

thanks,erin
