Server-side code & javascript

Hi,

Is it possible to perform a server-side operation, and return the
results of that operation to the client via Javascript without a
postback to the server?

Forgive me if I sound stupid but I'm a newbie.

ASP.NET 2.0 will have much improved support for this kind of thing.
The technology is called Script Callbacks.
