Using templates in a datalist

Hi,
Im confused with using templates for my datalist.
Can anyone suggest some good sites for examples...

Also, lets say I have one column of data :

Date
------
02/01/2004
02/02/2004
02/03/2004
How do I specify a template to display these rows horizontally
like

02/01/2004 -------- 02/02/2004 -------- 02/03/2004 ???

A small code sample would be useful to understand.

Thanks,
aja
