Validation Changing Control Properties

I would like to be able to change the properties of my controls based on
validation results. For example, if a control is not valid, I might want to
change its background color to red. I can imagine doing something like this
within a custom validator, but was wondering if there is a prefered way of
doing this what would work with all of the normal validation controls?
