I'm looking to learn ASP.NET better and thinking about helping my church
put together a website in order to do this. They need the help, I'd like
the training, so I'm thinking of going this route to solve their needs.
I'm wondering, though, if there are any hosts out there that do domain
hosting that support ASP.NET and database connectivity without charging
you an arm and a leg. And by database connectivity I don't mean Access,
but rather light SQL access. Maybe MySQL, maybe SQL Server with a limit on
space or something. Anyone have a suggestion?

I am with flarehosting.com myself. ASP.NET with SQL Server for $24.95/month.
One of the cheapest I have found for SQL Server 2000. This may not be as
cheap as you wish to go, however.
There is a search engine on www.actionjackson.com that might help. You can
filter down your search.

The best value I have found is with http://www.negox.com/.
They're <$15 month and, while they don't offer a lot of the add-in's like
discountasp.net, they do offer MYSQL & SQL Server hosting as part of the
package, not as an add-on.

Might want to check out Brinkster.com
I used them for a few test projects I was working on. If I recall, they
were pretty cheap and offered database support.
SQL support will cost you more than Access support. Depending on how many
folks you plan on having hitting your website, Access will probably work
fine for ya.

.
We offer .NET and SQL Server 2k hosting. While we are not normally the
cheapest, we are definitely the most cooperative and technically accessible.
If you are interested, look over our website and contact me. I believe that
our strongest quality is that we are a small company who can give you
one-on-one attention, just like I am doing now. We have incredible uptime
and enjoy working with people to accomplish straight forward goals.
Thanks

Yep - all but what you said-or-think if it's negative.
I don't do negative, but do have a sense of humor.
I have no reason or will to prove anything, only to help those that need it.

I am using www.webhost4life.com
they have great prices, a great control panel, and offer sql server
very cheaply in their packages

Another person's opinion about WebHost4Life -
I think their control panel is so-so:
- non-intuitive in a number of areas. If in doubt, look at "email forwards".
- their "canned stats" package is okay for what it is - "you get what we SAY
you can get". Raw logs? Hah.
- Web stats should be "private", i.e.- not accessible by the whole world.
Your WH4L site stats are wide-open to the anyone.
- According to their help desk, web sites are only updated once a day.
Shortly after I asked about this, mine started updating twice a day.
Certainly never going to get a real-time look and see if the site is
quiescent/nearly quiescent to do an update, etc.with the way it is now.
Site Options and Freebies
- Oops, guess whose "free shared SSL" doesn't work with ASP.Net??!!
- they charge for "Custom 404"
Getting Configured:
- the setup instructions they send you via email are wrong, wrong, wrong.
- the info on the FAQ about setting up for ftp file transfer is also
incorrect.
Support:
- open a ticket and keep polling the web site to see if they've DONE
anything. They don't notify you when a ticket has been worked.
- they close tickets without your verification that the problem has ACTUALLY
been fixed.
Been online for over a month with no problems with the site itself, but it
is not as responsive as content d/l'd from ReadyHosting.com (probably
because of the difference between T-3 (WH4L) and OC-48 (ReadyHosting) trunk
connections... I'm thinking seriously about moving to ReadyHosting, despite
their being a little "pricier" (and the 2x differential they charge between
ASP.Net and ASP hosting...)

Obviously my experience is a bit different from yours.
Can not comment on SSL and Logs but for the price they charge i got
everything i expected and even more.
When i had a trouble with my ASP.NET App (my stupidity) their staff was able
to pinpoint the problem and i got an answer within an hour.
Never had a problem with setup instructions and control panel.
It might not have OC-48 but again if i needed that bandwidth i would get a
dedicated server anyway.
George.
