is there anyway to get the width of the scrollbar from the client machine to
be used in the asp.net codebehind? thanks

Not that I am aware of. Without using some client-side code to pass these
parameters in to the server, I am unaware of anything beyond what
information the HttpBrowserCapabilities class offers to you in terms of
information. Out of curiosity, why would this matter?

graphic design problem... when you have a fixed size window, and graphics
that are fixed size, then have text spill down horizontally, you have to
compensate for the scroll bars that get placed ot resize the window so the
bars dont interfear with graphics
