Font Usage - ASP.NET

Iam planning to use Webdings font for sorting on grid
headers. Is this font commonly available on all machines?

It's quite common on Windows machines but I would recommend creating a small
image from the symbol you want to use instead of the actual font characters
to preserve Mac, Linux, etc. compatibility.
