user controls and event order

I have a user control which displays the contents of a shopping cart in
a small box on one side of a page. I want this control to display the
contents of the shopping cart whenever the user adds an item. Currently
however, the user controls will only update when it is forced to do so
through clicking a button within the user control itself. What is the
typical event order here? Do user controls fire their Page_Load events
before anything else (which is what appears to be happening)? Is there
any way to control this? Thanks!
