Smartnavigation and EditItemIndex problem

I have a datalist with an itemedittemplate. When I have smartnavigation on,
I can't exit out from edit mode with EditItemIndex = -1. When
smartnavigation is off, everything works fine. I know smartnavigation has
problems. It seems this is one of them.

I am thinking of simulating smartnavigation using anchor links. Anyone had
success with them?
