Jayender,

ActiveX controls work "differentl y" on web pages than they do in Windows
applications.

There are several things you need to be concerned about:
- how will the control be installed on the user's PC?
- how will upgrades to the control be handled (bug fixes)?
- how will non-IE browsers be handled (eg. firefox)?
- how will the control get its data?
- Will we code sign the control (you really really should)?

The raw mechanics of including a control:
<OBJECT ID=MyControl classid="clsid: 99999999-9999-9999-9999-999999999999">
<PARAM NAME="x" VALUE="5">
</OBJECT>

or
<object
ID=MyControl
classid="clsid: 99999999-9999-9999-9999-999999999999"
CODEBASE="http://www.mysite.com/MyControl.cab#v ersion=-1,-1,-1,-1">
<PARAM NAME="x" VALUE="5">
</object>
The classid parameter is the GUID for the specific control you need to
create. The CODEBASE parameter indicates where the control can be installed
from.

Also note that IE has change the rules on how controls are activated. You
may have seen "click here or press space bar to activate this control"
messages. This is fall out from the Eolas lawsuit. These can be worked
around, but generally requires the control to be created via JavaScript.

And... I don't know for sure so this is a guess... but I don't think VS.NET
HTML editor supports automatically inserting <OBJECTtags for ActiveX
controls. In the past I just fired up FrontPage to do the initial insert
(more or less identify the CLSID guid for me)... but I bet you could do this
with the OLEView tool as well (or just by poking around in the registery).

A nice example site for handling the initial installation, tracking, and
updating of an ActiveX control is the MSN Money site. They have a very nice
portfolio manager/stock graphing tool that is deployed as an ActiveX
control.

Also note that end users must be members of at least the Power Users local
group to be allowed to install ActiveX controls. And debugging what has gone
wrong with an ActiveX install can be very very challenging.

Regards,

Rob MacFadyen

Using Visual Studio 2005 I add the control to my Toolbox. I then drag the control onto a Panel control that is on a form. That is it. I don't write any code at all. When I run the program I get the following error:

I have been working on this for several days and am still have had no success in achieving this. Pleae help. It seems that documentation for this is very limited. I have looked in several books and they all seem to say either nothing about this or that this is "out of the scope of this book", even "Professional ASP.NET". I have a ActiveX component that I'd like to expose through a .NET wrapper so in the case that a client browses to my...

I am trying to use the utility tlbimp to add old ActiveX controls and Ocx's to the Toolbox of Vs2005. I tried to apply the the tlbimp to both the Tlb or Dll or Ocx files. The resulting Dll would not load into the toolbox. I suspect I am missing something fundamental. Note that I tried to add to the Vs2005 toolbox both with the original legacy control registered and not registered. In neither case would it load. Because we do not have...

Hello Philippe, In addition to bruce's points, I'd suggest the KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317392. It demonstrates how to host an ActiveX control in ASP.NET (for your first question), and points out that ActiveX control is a pure client-side control, the server-side code cannot access this control (for your second question). Server-side code can access only server controls, which are the controls that are listed on the Web...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
