insert new record in detailsview - how to get master id

Here is the problem:

Using asp.net 2.0 to create a web app with standard master table gridview
and child detailsview with insert capability.
SQL Server 2000 database on the backend. Using Visual Web Developer for
front-end development.

I want to insert new records in detailsview based on selected gridview
record. All the fields in "INSERT" mode are blank, which is okay EXCEPT that
I want the child ID to be that of the selected gridview record. For example,
to put a new order for customer with customerID 367, I need 367 to be
inserted in the new Orders record.

This is a very standard database and application design problem, but can't
seem to get a solution for it.

Please help if you can

Can anyone answer this one? I am facing the same scenario. When I click
Insert on my child formview control, I get an error stating that it
cannot insert null into the parent key field in the child table. Where
do I make the connection between the parent formview data and the child
formview data?

I have the datasource for the child formview configured to use the
parent formview control for it's where clause expression, and, where
child records already exist, it works fine, but I can't get it to
insert a new record successfully in either case.

Hi, I'm trying to use the sqldatasource control and a detailsview to create a fully functional data entry screen; it's quite easy. I can see the strength of creating a master grid associated with a detailsview that gives you access to the record you choose in the grid. However one of the basic functions of this type of screen is the ability to enter a search term and have the grid display the record that is closest the search term....

Hi, Here is the problem that I'm trying to solve. I have a DetailsView on the page, which is set to work in Edit Mode. On insert it adds a record to SQL Server 2000 database. Everything is working nice and dandy on Windows 2000 machine, which is where my development environment installed. This INSERT is also working ok on any other 2000 machine that I tried it on. But the same page is not working under Windows XP machines, giving me...

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I have a gridview and a detailsview. The detailsview is set to insert by default. When I insert data the detailsview it works. The data goes in the database. The gridview on the page, however, never refreshes to show the new row. The sql for the gridview defaults to a LIKE % and when the page first loads I can see all the records. If after I try an edit a gridview record and delete or cancel, then...

Hi -- I have an ASP.NET web app that I just converted to use a Master Page for common content (banner and nav). I also just updated my version of the MS Ajax framework to the latest one (and had to rename my controls to <asp:...instead of <atlas:...etc..) I have a DetailsView on the page, with Edit and Insert capability. When I insert a record, I get an exception as follows, but it's after

I am struggling with trying to retrieve the value of an autoincrement identity field after a DetailsView Insert operation. The DetailsView is bound to an SqlDataSource control. So far as I can tell, nowhere in the arguments for either the Inserted event for the DetailsView or the Inserted event for the SqlDataSource control is the value stored. Adding a dummy bound column for the identity field to the DetailsView doesn't work, either. ...

Hello, I am new at this, and have been trying to insert data into a table by using the footer of a gridview (which I dont like) or by using a detials view on the same page that is doing the following: 1) gets query string from url and filters records (works great) via a Details View 2) shows notes that have been added to the record shown in the details view using a grid view, and it filters the data by looking at the ID that is selected in...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
