Dynamic dropdown suggestion list on key press, 1 million possible results.

Maybe one of you can offer a possible solution to the problem I have below.

The request to me is to build a dynamically populating dropdown list from a text box.(something similar to Google Suggest.)

The idea is that the client wants to come in and search for something but may only know part of the name. So they type it in.

Eg. Egg

The list generates after each letter they put in and produces a list of suggested matches.

So exam. Eggnog, egg-fon-do, Eggwhites,

Simple enough, I even have the code available to produce the dropdown effect.

Where this easy task becomes a problem is that we would have over 1 million records to go through and compare, some of these items may have the details we require stored in 3 or 4 places. For example a street address maybe be stored as:
8833 gooddale
Mississauga Ontario, l5d 3l5

Or it could be
Steven, 8833 Good Dale
Mississauga Ontario
L5d 315

We have at current a table separate from all the of the details that is used for the search field but it takes from that only line 2. now on the occasion that Line 2 does not have the proper information we references a stored procedure that then checks the other lines.

So the problem comes back, we canít be doing a sql search on over a million records especially with every keystroke, and as well referencing the Stored procedure. Our network/DB Admin guys would have heart failure.

Any suggestions on how I might achieve my goal.

We would be programming in ASP/JavaScript and accessing an Sql 2000 server.
