working with asp

Do I need the www publishing service to work with .asp?
I have this error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 2/1/2007
Time: 3:08:11 PM
User: N/A
Computer: RALEIGH
Description:
The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated with the following
error:
The authentication service is unknown.

When I checked out the personal web manager it shows that my home page is
not
available because default document is off.

Can anyone advise?

Can't thank you enough
I have been trying to repair that problem for a year now.
I didn't know that I needed Client for MS Networking
to use Asp. I asked in this group and several others.
I must have asked the question in the wrong fashion.

insight always appreciated
Thank You

I don't recall your orignal post, but when I found a website with ASP (in my
signature below), I didn't have to do anything special.

I just used FrontPage 2003 to log on live to the site and wrote, saved and
tested the code from within FP. (Well, testing involved using the "Preview
in Browser" menu entry in FP which is identical to logging on to the site,
but doesn't require actually exiting FP to do it)

Perhaps FP includes the necessary programs.
