warn user before session expiration

Only as a kludge. This deals with the way HTTP comm works. Once a page is
requested, the client is no longer connected to the server. You can create a
popup after X minutes (20 minutes is the default for IIS) or simply use a
META refresh to redirect after X minutes (to a logoff page, most likely), or
a combination.

All of this has to be done in Client side script (JavaScript best for the
widest array of browsers).
