hyperlink to files not in web root

Joe
How do I write a hyperlink on an asp page to a word doc
not in the web root?

If I have a page in my test directory of the web root and
my files are sitting on my e drive?

Thanks

You need to create a virtual directory if you want those doc files to be
accessible via an http url. For example, on the root of your site create a
virtual directory named "docs" and point it at the folder on E: that has the
files. You can then hyperlink to http://yourserver/docs/file1.doc ...

You can stream it to the user using ADODB.Stream

Joe
Thanks. That is what I was trying. Is there a difference
with a word file? I wouldn't think there should be but
when I stream it to the browser and get the save as dialog
box I save it to my desktop and then can't open it in word?

Thanks for your reply.

What does "can't open it" mean? Do you get an error message? If so, what
is it?

And this doesn't happen if you open the Word file without "downloading" it?
Or did you try that? I really don't think that this method is corrupting
your file, perhaps it is already corrupt. I've never had a problem using
ADODB.Stream for Office documents...

Sorry, I can't reproduce the problem. Maybe it's some language or regional
settings on your issue, the same problems that caused your other post to
come out all garbage the way you're seeing your Word document.

I don't know what happened to the other post. I opened it
from the directory that the server is serving from and the
file is fine. Only when I do a save as or open is it
corrupted. I am using code modified only in path and
filename from that downloaded from ASPFAQ.com

I dunno what's going on word is XP and IE is 6 sp1.

Thanks again
