I've got this very basic FSO script - it works fine when I use the
commented out folder, but not when I use one created dynamically. How come?
<%option explicit
dim objFSO, fld
'fld = "g:\ul_tmp\1\"
fld = "g:\ul_tmp\" & session("client_id") & "\" & now()
set objFSO = Server.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
if not objFSO.folderexists(fld) then
objFSO.CreateFolder fld
%>
<script>alert("creating: <%=fld%>");</script>
<% else %>
<script>alert("<%=fld%> exists.");</script>
<% end if %> 7 2509
Perhaps because Now() contains a ":" character, which is not allowed in a
directory or filename. I suggest you come up with a different way of naming
your directories.

is there an error?
What does the "dyanmic" folder come up as when you write it to the screen?
are there invalid characters?

I did.
I replaced everything in now() so now, NOW() is just numbers, and
letters, but that still gives:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a004c'
Path not found

I don't see anywhere in your code that you're doing that. What does this
return?
fld = "g:\ul_tmp\" & session("client_id") & "\" & now()
RESPONSE.WRITE FLD
RESPONSE.END

Sorry, I didn't repost that new code.
Here it is:
option explicit
dim objFSO, dt, fld
dt = replace(now(), " ", "")
dt = replace(dt, ":", "")
dt = replace(dt, "/", "")
fld = "g:\ul_tmp\" & session("client_id") & "\" & dt
response.write fld
set objFSO = Server.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
if not objFSO.folderexists(fld) then
objFSO.CreateFolder fld
if err.number = 0 then
response.write(fld & " created.")
end if
end if
%> RESPONSE.WRITE FLD RESPONSE.END
g:\ul_tmp\1000\382004122545PM

It seems that what you're trying to do is get the FSO to create a new
directory in a directory that does not yet exist. Like:
C:\Path '''exists on system already
FSO.CreateFolder "C:\Path\Subdir\Subsubdir"
'''this causes error
'''This will not cause an error
FSO.CreateFolder "C:\Path\Subdir"
FSO.CreateFolder "C:\Path\Subdir\Subsubdir"
