Update problem

Performing an update in asp is pretty straightforward but I am not sure how
to do the following and would appreciate a bit of help.

I need to update a field "fld1" by replacing the left 3 characters of "fld1"
with something.

Any ideas ?

What kind of database?

UPDATE theTable SET fld1='something'+right(fld1,len(fld1)-3)
