Need help regarding Proxy

Dear Community members, I want to know that what is proxy server and how it maintain and what is actual functioning of it and what is main purpose of proxy server.

A proxy server normally sits between the LAN and the internet in a company. It performs several purposes

1. Allows entire company to access the internet while only using the IP addresses assigned to that company

2. Runs the Firewall

3. Other things I can't think of right now.

Generally it's purpose is to coordinate traffic flowing from the internet to the company and vice versa

What Banfa said is correct, apart from the network administrator can also use a proxy server to filter the allowed and disallowed sites, meaning you can control users from visiting certain web site. Time restriction can also applied for this purpose.
