Server directory structure

I am setting up a ASP.NET intranet site. I will be using
VS 2003 as development tool. I am not sure about what
should be the best directory structure to use on the
production server for the site. Does any one know of a
good source of information for this?

My current thought is that I will have one root directory
(hence one application). There will be many pages in this
site so I will use folders within the root directory to
separate them just so they have some organization. My
reasoning for having 1 application is that I am creating
our own very detailed security system and all pages on
the site fall under it so it made sense to have them all
in the same application, plus it would make sharing other
components easier.

The complete set of files would be on my development
machine, then I would use "Copy Project" in VS 2003 to
copy the application to a "Test" application on the
production server where it would go through another set
of tests. It would then be copied from there to
a "Production" application.

Am I dreaming, is this too complex, or does it sound like
it would work?
