Selecting client-side files

Hello

In days gone by I was a VB programmer but currently tasked to find some
answers for a ASP guy.

Basically I am wanting to incorporate some of the functionality of the
Common Dialog control into this Web tool we are building, specifically
the InitDir and FileType properties. The end user needs to select a
file stored client-side - is this possible using IE6?

Thanks

Kathy

What do you want to allow the end user to do with the selected file?

ASP is server-side technology. You will probably get more help by posting to
a client-side newsgroup such as microsoft.public.scripting. jscript.

That said, I doubt you will be able to use that dll from script. Maybe in a
HTA (HTML application) since it is subject to less security restrictions
than a normal web page. Do a search at msdn.microsoft.com/library for more
information.

You allow selection of a client-side file for transmission to the
server by using the <input type="file"....> HTML element. Given normal
security setup, there is no other way to select a client-side file,
and nothing else you can do with that file once it's been selected.
(Your client-side Javascript can retrieve the name of the selected
file, but cannot open it or do anything to it. And client-side
Javascript cannot set the value of the <input type="file"...> element,
it's read-only.)
