connect using the (servername/ip) and then a comma and the port number
they were not smart enough to make a place for the port number in enterprise
manager

Can you connect to the database with ODBC or OleDB? I think EM uses the
same port (1433 is the default but sometimes it is changed to prevent
attacks).
