Problem with IIS and asp.net

Hi,

When I attempt to create a new project "asp.net web application" in
Visual Basic.net, I get this message:

"Web server reported following error when attempting to create or open
the web project located at following URL:
HTTP/ 1-1 500 server error"

I've tried:
Bringing up a page on browser like: HTTP://LocalHost/localstart.asp
(browser reports same 500 error)
Uninstalling IIS and reinstalling it.
Refreshing the install of Visual Basic.net
Used MMC to start and stop IIS
Used NET START W3SVC to chk IIS as suggested in post above -- says
its already running.
Checked the System32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 logfile as suggest in post above
-- last results below.
Turned off the windows firewall and disabled virus SW -- no effect.
Some months ago after first installing VB.net, I tried a simple
asp.net web application, and it worked fine -- so something has
happened to make it stop working.

I'm probably showing exceptional dumbness here, but I have not been
able to find any explanation for the error 500. Where should i look?

Any other ideas would be very much appreciated.

I am running Windows XP pro, and Visual Basic.net Standard V2003.
The XP has all the updates installed.

Thanks Gary

This newsgroup is for classic ASP, you'll get a better answer in a
dotnet group.
