ASP pages fail, http works fine

Has anyone seen these symptoms?

Running IIS 4.0 on NT 4.0. Service packed and updated to
the max.

Reboot system and everything works fine. After some
undetermined period of time (between 10 and 36 hours) asp
pages stop working and just hang. Normal HTML pages work
just fine.

When we try to stop the WWW Publishing service, it will
not respond.

There is nothing that appears appropriate in any of the
event logs.

Additionally, according to performance monitor, the number
of concurrent connections (and anonymous users) has
skyrocketed to 500 (normally 100) and is not decreasing.

Just discovered that if we run a website in its own
address space (checkbox in IIS properties for the website)
that it continues to work fine.

Please let me know if you have seen this. It's causing
some serious grief.

Although this says IIS5, it's worth reading and seeing if it's the issue.

Hi Ken...

It's a web server that is running around 300+ websites. Some sites use
Access, some use SQL and some are just hobby sites that don't use a
database.

The load appears to be pretty low most of the time. When we get into
this situation where ASP stops working, the load is negligible -- 2-10%

I do know that you need to run ASP in its own application process; section
that appears in Application Settings and clicking Configuratioon. Doing this
will prevent your entire site going down if there happens to be some rogue
ASP coding that effects performance or crashes.

Rick - We are also getting this, but after upgrading to
Windows 2000 Server with IIS and IE 6.0.
Our symptoms are exactly the same including the hanging
WWW publishing service if you try to stop it when asp is
not working; the only solution is to restart the server.

I could not find the "run in own address space" checkbox
that you refer to? Where is that?

Regards,
Mark Walters.

Oh that's about the worst news I could hear, because our final straw
contingency plan was to upgrade to Win2K / IIS 5.0.

However, on the not-so-bad news front, I ended up moving one of the
websites -- an ecommerce siteserver site -- over to another server and
both servers have been working well for about 3 days and counting.
That's the longest up time in several weeks.

It's leading me to think that the problem was with the application, or
with the way that something in the application was interacting with the
operating system.

I'll keep everyone posted as to what I do find out.

..Rick..

p.s. That "Run in own memory space" is an IIS 4.0 option. You find it in
the "Home Directory" tab in IIS 4, but I didn't see it on IIS 5.
