Apache is limiting my visitors

i have a website which is getting many visitors. I was previously hosting to hostgator but since i was at a sharing package i could get maximum 1000 online visitors same time in 3 minutes when i posted to my fanpage on facebook which has around 300 k fans. when i exceded this number hostgator suspended my account. I transfered my files to a new dedicated server for this reason and now i am having 16 gb Ram quad core CPU etc. I am being limited somehow and i can t find the problem. I get maximum 300 visitors online when posting to fanpage. if you need extra information please ask me. I am newbie in apache.
thank you

Your server should be able to handle that. Is it static html/image files or is it perl/php type files?

Most likely will just have to configure your apache configuration file. It's a file called "httpd.conf"

to find it on your server from command line"
find / - name 'httpd.conf

You could paste what's in that file on here. And also tell us more about the specs & bandwidth. Memory, CPU, HD, OS etc

Also if you're using scripts that aren't optimized to handle big traffic that could be an issue. For example, bad written database queries or code that uses a lot of memory.
