How do I know if my Apache Server is working?

I just installed MAMP and doing a tutorial through http://sawmac.com/dwcs5/. I've loaded the PHP files in Applications/MAMP/htdocs but when I type in http://localhost I get a blank screen but I should be seeing the site. Per David McFarland in my Dreamweaver CS5: The Missing Manual "my server must be set up incorrectly" How can I fix this.

do you have the default installation of Apache deactivated? (Mac comes with Apache and PHP pre-installed)

I did not deactivate it...Didn't even know it came installed. Just purchased a MacBook Pro. I will look into this...MAMP seems to be working just fine and don't understand why I can't see the site.
