which protocol to use: http or https?

Hi everyone,
Could anyone kindly help me.
I've increasingly been learning that https is the 'secure version' of the http protocol. I have a couple of basic questions:

How insecure is http compared with https?

If https is the 'secure alternative', why should anyone use http in the first place? Is there some other plus to it, compared to https?

Can I get some really basic introductory guide to these issues?

Regards,
Ifedi.
