report slow to open (Access)

72 64KB
Hi,
I have a very simple report, just 6 textboxes and around 250 items.
The report is only slow to open (10 seconds) when I first load up the Report. After that the report loads up instantaneously.
Was wondering why.

Thanks

This sounds like it may be an issue with one or more of your printers.

Have you tried opening the query behind the report separately to see if the query itself is slow?

I can't give you an answer "why," but I have experienced similar activities. A Query or form or report may take a long time to open the first time with a new recordset behind it, but then opening the second time it is quicker. Any changes to the recordset behind it will induce more delays again upon opening the first time.

Again, I don't understand why Access works this way.

Is your query terribly complex and performing a bunch of calculations or sub-querying? These usually slow things down the most.

Hope this hepps!

I opened the query right after starting Access and it is instant, very simple query.

I just found out that all the Reports behave the same way. 10 secs to open the first one (any one) even in design view. After that there is no problem with any of them. Can live with that but was wondering if there was a reason. I have Access 2016, don't remember that happening with 2010.

Will delete them to check. Thing is, it happens even when opening it Design mode, it hangs for 10 secs and then i get the report in design mode, so without the query run.

I set my default printer to PDF...and yes no problems now! My printer was off so maybe access searched for it?

Thanks!!

That's exactly what it would do; yes.

The delay would be waiting for a response until it timed out. Access Reports work very closely with the printer it's designed to use - whether that be the Default Printer or a designated one. If it's unavailable for any reason the request will go to get the information anyway, and if nothing is returned within the specified timeout period then it continues. Very handy to understand that if you're working with Reports in Access.
